We live in a war zone and are constantly under attack.
Many of our struggles are a direct attack on our souls from our enemy; Satan. He’s the liar and the father of lies. He wants to kill and destroy all God’s children by assaulting them with lies, doubts, and deceit.
He patiently prowls the earth watching our every move and studying what we like and how we like it. He knows some of us better than we know ourselves.
Satan allures his prey with pleasures; pleasures of the flesh and pleasures of this world craftily disguising himself as the angel of light.
With Memorial Day just pasting many paid tribute to fallen soldiers who died severing our country because most of us appreciate the courage and sacrifice they made for our freedom.
But are we really free?
Being free is recognizing the power of sin in our lives and admit how we are helpless by ourselves against its persistence and strongholds. Only then will we be willing to accept God’s help.
After such admission we can start the life long battle towards becoming a good soldier of Christ.
What Makes A Good Soldier?
Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. And as Christ’s soldier, do not let yourself become tied up in the affairs of this life, for then you cannot satisfy the one who enlisted you in his army. ( 2 Timothy 2:3-4)
All Christian are soldiers in Jesus Christ but not all are good soldiers.
Many surrender to Satan’s temptations without a fight. But good soldiers know they are in a war that they can win only if they fight to the end when Jesus returns.
Just like Jesus they don’t fight for themselves but for the one who sent them. The All Mighty one who have overcome the world. They are willing to suffer for God, other soldiers and the ones who are still prisoners of war.
Like all soldiers, good soldiers experience pain, fear and a host of emotions. They understand their fight will be harder as believers then when they where non-believers.
They know God chose them to enlist in His army from what they had been through. Good soldiers are overcomers and have experience battling life on its terms.
Soldiers of Christ know there will be times when they grow weary and want to surrender.
But instead choose to persevere and choose to stand firm against the evil forces that desire to keep them away from walking in freedom.
Good Soldiers Know Their Enemy
We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the power and control of the evil one. (1 John 5:19)
Satan has been using the same attacks against God’s children for centuries.
He was present in paradise with Adam and Eve and he thrust himself among the sons of God when they presented themselves before the LORD, so he have no problem following me and you everywhere we go.
If God allows, Satan will even go into our place of worship and have us thinking about everything but the word that’s being preached.
While we may be grounded in knowing God’s word and accept our responsibilities to live a godly life, we MUST also be aware of the invisible warfare that wages again us.
God’s Kingdom fighting soldiers have godly discernment–the spiritual capacity to know right from wrong so lets look at some of the ways Satan attacks us:
Satan Attacks Our Minds
When Satan first approached Eve he attacked her mind with doubts about the truth of God’s word. That’s why the Bible tells us in Proverbs 4:23 to guard our heart because that’s where life starts.
Life starts and ends WITH you and IN you.
It’s important to know that when the Bible talks about the heart it isn’t only talking about our emotions.
In biblical days the heart was referred to as the whole human inner parts: Mind, Emotion and Will. All three together were considered the heart.
That’s the reason we are encouraged to put on the COMPLETE suit of armor.
When we are warned to guard our hearts we are being warned not to give into temptation of sinful pleasures of any kind.
We need be careful of who and what we listen to, as well as, what we stare at. The fruit looked delicious to Eve and the devil noticed her staring.
Our adversary knows if he can influence our thinking he can influence our actions.
Satan Attacks the Family
Marriage and family is dear to God’s heart. Adam and Eve were the first couple created by God. He was very pleased with them and told them to be fruitful and go start a family.
Satan know the foundation of a solid family is a good marriage. And the same way he attacked the first family with deceit, he blinded the minds of non-believers about marriage.
Satan, the god of this evil world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe, so they are unable to see the glories light of the Good News that is shining upon them. ( 2 Corinthians 4:4)
Getting married before God is good news. I know couples who have been together for years and when I ask why don’t they get married they ask me, why mess up what have been working?
It’s attitudes like this along with legalizing same-sex marriages are good examples of how Satan have blinded the world about marriage and attacked the foundation of the family.
And what about those who are married? Satan can distort the order of a marriage when God isn’t in the center of it.
Husbands are head of household according to scriptures loving his wife as himself by following God’s order.
But most households today are being led by wives because of husbands not taking lead and being passive.
It’s one of the main reasons for the high divorce rate. Why? Because God didn’t plan marriages to be that way. Wives are to help their husbands not lead them.
Satan Attacks The Church
If a man can’t lead his own family then it will be hard for him to lead the church family.
The home is a proving ground for potential church leaders and that’s another reason Satan attacks the family because it affects the body of Christ and the unity of the Church.
The Church is the people not the building.
Every member has been gifted in ways to make the church family strong so Satan attacks the body of Christ through division by scandals, gossip, lies and un-forgiveness.
He attacks the Church leaders through pride, false teaching and the desire to be popular.
We all have heard of Elders, deacons and preachers falling because of sexual sin. Those who teach biblical principles must also teach by the way they are living.
If not, they will let down the people they are supposed to build up.
Put On The Complete Suit of Armor
Good Christian soldier must be disciplined in Gods word and see this life as boot camp training. But how successful they are depends on how well they obey their commander Jesus Christ and how well they wear their armor.
In our next article you’ll learn the importance of each piece of armor and how to wear them properly so no parts of you are exposed to Satan’s deadly attacks except your back.
And we all know who have our backs covered.
